David a uimit din nou întreaga lume în proba de 100 m liber. Românul în vârstă de 20 de ani s-a impus cu un nou record european, 46:71, după ce a parcurs primii 50 m sub 23 de secunde, iar pe ultimii 50 m sub 24 secunde, devenind primul înotător din istorie care reușește această performanță. Mai mult, David Popovici a devenit primul înotător din istorie care termină proba de 100 m liber de patru ori sub 47 de secunde.

Timpul înregistrat de Popovici la Europenele U23 la 100 m liber nu este doar un nou record european! Este și al doilea cel mai bun timp din istorie la această probă, după cel al chinezului Zhanle Pan (46.40) reușit la Jocurile Olimpice Paris 2024.  
Între Popovici și Pan există o frumoasă rivalitate, nedeclarată, cei doi luptându-se în ultimii ani pentru supremație în proba de 100 m liber. În 2022, David a doborât recordul mondial, care rezistase 14 ani, iar în 2024 Pan a doborât recordul românului.

La Campionatele Mondiale din iulie, David și-a propus din nou să stabilescă un nou record mondial.

După succesul de la 100 m liber, David a dominat fără drept de apel finala de la 200 m liber pe care a terminat-o cu timpul 1:43:'64 - cea mai bună performanţă a anului.

Fără David în formație, ștafeta combinață de 4x100 m liber a României (Patrick-Sebastian Dinu, Alexandru Constantinescu, Maysa Rațiu, Rebecca-Aimee Diaconescu) a ocupat locul 7.

Aproape de podiumul continental a fost și Rebecca-Aimee Diaconescu, locul 4 la 1.500 m liber.

La CE U23, România a fost reprezentată de 13 sportivi, iar în clasamentul pe medalii, la final, a ocupat locul 6, cu trei medalii de aur și două de bronz (3 -0-2). Polonia a fost pe primul loc (5-4-2), urmată de Germania (5-2-1) și Ungaria (4-1-5).

Romania Wins Three Gold and Two Bronze Medals at the U23 European Swimming Championships! David Popovici Sets New Records!

The U23 European Swimming Championships in Samorin (Slovakia), dedicated to athletes under the age of 23, concluded with five medals for Team Romania – 3 gold and 2 bronze. The stars of the Romanian delegation were David Popovici, who won two gold medals (in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle) and one bronze (in the 50 m freestyle), and Denis Laurean Popescu, who claimed gold in the 100 m butterfly and bronze in the 50 m butterfly.

David once again amazed the world in the 100 m freestyle. The 20-year-old Romanian clinched victory with a new European record of 46.71 seconds, swimming the first 50 meters in under 23 seconds and the final 50 meters in under 24 seconds—becoming the first swimmer in history to achieve this performance. Moreover, David Popovici became the first swimmer ever to swim the 100 m freestyle under 47 seconds four times.

His time of 46.71 is not just a new European record—it is also the second-fastest time in history for this event, behind only China’s Zhanle Pan, who clocked 46.40 at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A friendly but fierce rivalry has developed between Popovici and Pan, who have been battling in recent years for dominance in the 100 m freestyle. In 2022, David broke the long-standing world record (which had lasted 14 years), only to see Pan surpass it in 2024.

At the upcoming World Championships in July, David aims once again to set a new world record.

Following his 100 m freestyle triumph, David dominated the 200 m freestyle final, finishing with a time of 1:43.64—the best performance of the year in this event.

Without David in the lineup, Romania’s mixed 4x100 m freestyle relay team (Patrick-Sebastian Dinu, Alexandru Constantinescu, Maysa Rațiu, Rebecca-Aimee Diaconescu) placed 7th.

Also close to a podium finish was Rebecca-Aimee Diaconescu, who took 4th place in the 1,500 m freestyle.
