Finala de la 1000 m a fost de infarct. Cătălin Chirilă și reprezentantul gazdelor Martin Fuksa s-au detașat în fruntea plutonului încă de la început și au trecut umăr la umăr de primul punct intermediar. La jumătatea cursei, Chirilă s-a distanțat considerabil și părea că se îndreaptă spre o victorie facilă. Cehul a revenit, însă, puternic pe ultima parte a traseului, iar finișul a fost terifiant. Cătălin Chirilă a rezistat eroic atacului furibund al principalului său adversar, iar câștigătorul s-a decis la foto finiș.  

După minute de așteptare care au părut ore, arbitrii care au studiat fotografia finalului cursei au decis: Cătălin Chirilă a trecut primul linia de sosire cu timpul 3: 46.781, în timp ce Martin Fuksa a fost al doilea cu timpul 3:46.838, la doar 57 miimi de secundă în spatele românului. Pe locul al treilea a sosit moldoveanul Serghei Tarnovschi (3:49.128)

Cătălin Chirilă și-a apărat astfel cu succes titlul continental cucerit anul trecut, iar cu aurul de la C1 – 1000 m și bronzul de la C1 – 500 m, are acum în palmares 7 medalii continentale – 3 aur, 1 argint, 3 bronz.

La Racice, aproape de podium au fost și Ilie Sprincean și Oleg Nuță, la canoe dublu masculin pe 500 m (C2 – 500 m). Cei doi s-au clasat pe locul 4 în această probă, cu timpul de 1:37.385, în spatele medaliaților cu bronz maghiarii Kristof Kollar/Istvan Juhasz (1:36.978). Italienii Gabriele Casadei/Carlo Tacchini (1:36.058) au cucerit titlul continental, iar argintul a revenit spaniolilor Daniel Grijalba/Adrian Sieiro (1:36.148).

Romania Wins GOLD and BRONZE at the 2025 European Canoe Sprint Championships

Cătălin Chirilă was the hero of the Romanian national team at the European Canoe Sprint Championships held at the Labe Arena in Račice, Czech Republic. The Romanian canoeist won the GOLD medal in the men's single canoe 1000 m event (C1 – 1000 m) and BRONZE in the C1 – 500 m.

The 1000 m final was heart-stopping. Cătălin Chirilă and the home favorite, Martin Fuksa, broke away from the pack early and crossed the first split side by side. At the halfway mark, Chirilă pulled ahead significantly and looked set for an easy win. However, the Czech athlete made a powerful comeback in the final stretch, turning the finish into a thriller. Chirilă held off a furious attack from his main rival with heroic effort, and the winner was decided by a photo finish.

After what felt like hours of tense waiting, the judges, upon reviewing the photo finish, declared: Cătălin Chirilă crossed the finish line first with a time of 3:46.781, while Martin Fuksa finished second at 3:46.838, just 57 thousandths of a second behind. Third place went to Moldova’s Serghei Tarnovschi (3:49.128).

With this victory, Cătălin Chirilă successfully defended his continental title won last year. Adding the gold from the C1 – 1000 m and the bronze from C1 – 500 m, his continental medal tally now stands at seven: 3 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze.

Also coming close to the podium in Račice were Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuță in the men's double canoe 500 m (C2 – 500 m). They placed fourth with a time of 1:37.385, just behind the bronze medalists from Hungary, Kristof Kollar/Istvan Juhasz (1:36.978).
The European title went to the Italians Gabriele Casadei/Carlo Tacchini (1:36.058), with silver going to the Spaniards Daniel Grijalba/Adrian Sieiro (1:36.148).
