Octavian Morariu continuă astfel o frumoasă ascensiune în Mișcarea Olimpică internațională.

Alexandru Șiperco, membru CIO pentru România între anii 1955 și 1998, a fost ultimul român membru în Comitetul Executiv al CIO. Șiperco a făcut parte din Comitetul Executiv CIO între 1979-1986, mai întâi ca membru, iar apoi ca vicepreședinte al CIO. 

Kirsty Coventry, prima femeie președinte CIO

Punctul culminant al celei de a 144-a Sesiuni CIO a fost alegerea noului conducător al Mișcării Olimpice internaționale.
Kirsty Coventry a devenit prima femeie aleasă în funcția de  președinte al Comitetului Internațional Olimpic, pentru un mandat de opt ani.
La 41 de ani, ministrul Sportului din Zimbabwe a devenit al 10-lea președinte al CIO.

Președintele ales Kirsty Coventry îl va înlocui pe președintele în funcție Thomas Bach, care a fost ales pentru prima dată în 2013 și reales în 2021. Ea a primit 49 de voturi, din cele 97 de voturi exprimate în primul tur, exact numărul necesar pentru o majoritate.

Președintele ales Coventry va prelua funcția de la Thomas Bach, actualul președinte CIO, de Ziua Olimpică, 23 iunie 2025

Președintele Bach, care rămâne în funcție până atunci, după transferul mandatului, va demisiona din funcția de membru al CIO și va prelua rolul de Președinte de Onoare CIO, pe viață, aprobat în unanimitate de membrii CIO.

Thomas Bach a fost aplaudat la scenă deschisă de membrii CIO pentru reformele progresiste pe care le-a promovat în Agenda Olimpică.

Octavian Morariu Elected to the IOC Executive Board

After 39 years, Romania once again has a representative on the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Octavian Morariu, an IOC member for Romania since 2013, was elected with 53 votes for a four-year term on the IOC Executive Board during the 144th IOC Session, held at the exclusive Costa Navarino resort in Greece.

The last Romanian to serve on the IOC Executive Board was Alexandru Șiperco, who was an IOC member for Romania between 1955 and 1998. Șiperco was part of the IOC Executive Board from 1979 to 1986, first as a member and later as IOC Vice President.

Kirsty Coventry Becomes First Female IOC President

The highlight of the 144th IOC Session was the election of the new leader of the International Olympic Movement. Kirsty Coventry made history by becoming the first woman elected as President of the International Olympic Committee, securing an eight-year term.

At 41 years old, the Minister of Sport of Zimbabwe becomes the 10th IOC President.

President-elect Kirsty Coventry will replace current IOC President Thomas Bach, who was first elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2021. Coventry won with 49 votes out of 97 in the first round, exactly the number needed for a majority.

She will officially assume her duties on Olympic Day, June 23, 2025.

Thomas Bach, who remains in office until then, will step down as an IOC member after transferring his mandate. He has been unanimously approved to become IOC Honorary President for Life.

President Bach received a standing ovation from IOC members for the progressive reforms he championed through the Olympic Agenda.
