În lupta pentru podium, sportivul de la CSM Pitești, pregătit de Viorel Ciobanu, care pe 20 septembrie 2026 va împlini 19 ani, nu a reușit să reediteze performanța din semifinale unde cu timpul de 14:57.97 a stabilit un nou record național la +19 ani. El l-a întrecut însă pe irlandezul Daniel Wiffen, dublu campion mondial la 800 și 1500 m liber, în 2024, la Doha, campion olimpic la 800 m liber și medaliat cu bronz olimpic la 1500 m la Paris 2024.

 Finala masculină de la 1500 m a fost istorică! Neamțul Johannes Liebmann a impus un ritm draconic și a cucerit medalia de aur cu un nou record mondial - 14:26.79 (precedentul record îi aparținea americanului Bobby Finke - 14:30.67 în finala olimpică din 2024). Ungurul Zalan Sarkany, cu timpul 14:39.45, s-a clasat al 2-lea, iar neamțul Oliver Klemet a fost al 3-lea (14:40.64).

Theodor Proca, pentru care medalia de bronz cucerită la Festivalul Olimpic al Tineretului European – Maribor 2024 a fost trambulina spre marile performanțe, a fost singurul din cei 11 înotători români participanți la CE care, în afară de David Popovici, a reușit calificarea într-o finală la Europenele de la Paris de anul acesta.

Theo a obținut o performantă notabilă și la 800 m unde, în calificări, a obținut cea mai bună performanță personală, dar nu a intrat în lupta pentru podiumul continental.

Theodor Proca finishes 7th in the 1500m final, as Germany’s Johannes Liebmann smashes the world record

The first Romanian swimmer to break the 15-minute barrier in the 1500m freestyle, Theodor Proca finished seventh in a spectacular final at the European Championships in Paris, clocking 15:02.15.

In the battle for the podium, the CSM Pitești swimmer, coached by Viorel Ciobanu, who will turn 19 on September 20, 2026, was unable to match his performance from the heats, where he set a new Romanian national record with a time of 14:57.97.

However, he did finish ahead of Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen, the 2024 world champion in both the 800m and 1500m freestyle in Doha, Olympic champion in the 800m freestyle and Olympic bronze medallist in the 1500m freestyle at Paris 2024.

The men’s 1500m freestyle final was historic! Germany’s Johannes Liebmann set a blistering pace and won the gold medal in a new world record of 14:26.79, breaking the previous mark of 14:30.67 set by American Bobby Finke in the Olympic final in 2024. Hungary’s Zalan Sarkany finished second in 14:39.45, while Germany’s Oliver Klemet took third place in 14:40.64.

For Theodor Proca, whose bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Maribor proved to be a springboard towards top-level performances, this Paris final marked another important step in his career.

He was the only one of Romania’s 11 swimmers at this year’s European Championships, apart from David Popovici, to qualify for a final.

Theo also delivered a notable performance in the 800m freestyle, setting a new personal best in the heats, although he did not advance to the medal race.
