Amalia Covaliu a primit trofeul de la Kirsty Coventry, președinta Comitetului Internațional Olimpic, și de la președintele EOC Spyros Capralos.

Pentru prima dată în istoria decernării acestui trofeu, două sportive au avut același număr de voturi, atleta estoniană Allika Inkeri Moser și Amalia Covaliu primind câte 13 voturi la cea de-a 55-a Adunare Generală a EOC din capitala Ungariei.
Luptătoarea muntenegreană de taekwondo Andrea Berisaj a primit 8 voturi, tenismanul bulgar Ivan Ivanov a avut 7 voturi, gimnasta britanică Ruby Evans a primit 6 voturi, iar ciclista slovenă Marusa Tereza Serkezi a avut doar 2 voturi.

Premiul constă într-o bursă de formare de 15.000 euro pe care Amalia Covaliu o va putea utiliza pentru pregătirea sportivă.

Alături de Amalia s-au aflat părinții Mihai Covaliu, președintele Comitetului OLimpic și Sportiv Român, și mama sa Irina, precum și reprezentanți ai Comitetului de Organizare al FOTE Brașov 2027.

Spectacolul din sala de concerte Vigado unde a avut loc Gala a fost un tribut adus pasiunii pentru sport a maghiarilor care și-au prezentat istoria olimpică dar și priceperea în organizarea marilor competiții mondiale și europene la diferite discipline.

Un singur sportiv român a mai primit acest premiu până în prezent - campionul olimpic la înot David Popovici, în 2021. În 2012, gimnasta Larisa Iordache s-a clasat a doua.

Premiul a fost creat în memoria fostului președinte al Comitetului Olimpic Polonez Piotr Nurowski, decedat în 2010 într-un tragic accident de avion, și se acordă anual pentru sporturile de vară și, separat, pentru cele de iarnă.

Fencer Amalia Covaliu Named Europe's Best Young Athlete of 2025

Romanian sabre fencer Amalia Covaliu was awarded the Piotr Nurowski Prize for the Best Young European Athlete of 2025 during the European Olympic Committees (EOC) Awards Gala, held in Budapest in June 2026.

Amalia Covaliu received the trophy from Kirsty Coventry, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), and Spyros Capralos, President of the European Olympic Committees.

For the first time in the history of the award, two athletes finished with the same number of votes. Amalia Covaliu and Estonian athlete Allika Inkeri Moser each received 13 votes during the 55th EOC General Assembly in the Hungarian capital.

Montenegrin taekwondo athlete Andrea Berisaj received 8 votes, Bulgarian tennis player Ivan Ivanov collected 7, British gymnast Ruby Evans received 6, while Slovenian cyclist Maruša Tereza Serkezi earned 2 votes.

The award includes a €15,000 development scholarship, which Amalia Covaliu will use to support her athletic preparation.

Joining Amalia at the ceremony were her parents, Mihai Covaliu, President of the Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee, and her mother, Irina Covaliu, as well as representatives of the Brașov 2027 European Youth Olympic Festival Organising Committee.

The gala, held at Budapest's Vigadó Concert Hall, celebrated Hungary's passion for sport by showcasing the country's Olympic history and its expertise in organizing major European and World Championships across a wide range of sports.

Only one other Romanian athlete has received this prestigious distinction: Olympic swimming champion David Popovici, who won the award in 2021. In 2012, gymnast Larisa Iordache finished as runner-up.

The Piotr Nurowski Prize was established in memory of Piotr Nurowski, the former President of the Polish Olympic Committee, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash in 2010. The award is presented annually in separate categories for summer and winter sports.
