David a întors al 3-lea după prima lungime ce bazin, a fost al 4-lea la mijlocul cursei, iar pe final a înotat umăr la umăr cu americanul Luke Hobson pentru aurul mondial. Cu o mobilizare de excepție pe ultimii metri, David a încheiat primul finala, cu timpul 1:43.53, urmat Hobson (1:43.84) și de japonezul Tatsuya Murasa (1:44.54).

David Popovici – World Champion in Singapore

On Romania's National Anthem Day, “Deșteaptă-te, române!” echoed through the World Aquatics Arena as David Popovici delivered an exceptional, trademark race at the World Swimming Championships in Singapore!

The Olympic champion in the 200m freestyle from Paris confirmed his dominance in this event by winning his second world title, after his 2022 victory in Budapest, at the end of a heart-stopping final. David turned 3rd after the first length, was 4th at the halfway mark, then swam shoulder to shoulder with American Luke Hobson in the final meters to seize the world gold. With an incredible sprint in the final stretch, David finished first with a time of 1:43.53, followed by Hobson (1:43.84) and Tatsuya Murasa from Japan (1:44.54).

Exactly one year ago, on July 29, David became Olympic champion in Paris!

"I think this was even better than at the Olympics. I trained harder for the Olympic Games. This final comes after a more relaxed year, and I’m actually happier about this medal than the Olympic one. I keep telling myself I have to do this, I have to win, I have to swim as well as I can, that I can’t give up," said David Popovici after the final.

With this remarkable result, David Popovici becomes the first swimmer in history to swim the 200m freestyle under 1:43.00 for the fifth time.

The 200m freestyle is the first of three events — 200m, 100m, and 50m freestyle — that he plans to swim in Singapore!

Anul trecut, chiar pe 29 iulie, David a devenit campion olimpic la Paris!

"Cred că a fost mai bine decât la JO. M-am antrenat mai mult pentru Jocurile Olimpice. Această finală vine după un an mai relaxat, mă bucur mai mult pentru această medalie decât pentru cea olimpică. Îmi spun că trebuie să fac asta, că trebuie să câștig, trebuie să înot cât pot de bine, că nu pot să renunț", a spus David Popovici, după finală.

După acest nou rezultat remarcabil, David Popovici a devenit primul sportiv din istoria natației care a înotat 200 m sub 1:43.00 pentru a 5-a oară.

Proba de 200 m liber este prima dintre cele trei - 200, 100, 50 m liber - pe care și le-a propus să le înoate la Singapore!
